How We Started

An Seanchai Theatre company was formed in October of 2022 in anticipation of artistic director, Siobhan Keely's first full length play as playwright. The Weight of Shame was premiered at the Irish Association of Manitoba to three nights of sold out audiences. Based on the true story out of Tuam, Ireland, the play told the story of Catherine Corless and her fierce fight against church and government to recognise 798 babies left buried in a septic tank outside a mother and baby home. In May of that same year, Siobhan met Catherine in Ireland to see the site of the tank, where the babies still lay, and to give Catherine a copy of the script.

An Seanchai is excited to team up with Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre for an evening of one act plays!

An Seanchai performs THE TOWPATH by Robert Iles.

This four-woman play unfolds as Anne becomes the focal point for a diverse and evolving group of strangers. Each individual arrives with a distinct problem to be solved. Through their interactions, the play delves into themes of friendship, resilience, and the transformative power of storytelling, revealing how the act of sharing one’s burdens can foster understanding and connection among those we've just met.

Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre presents ONE STOPLIGHT TOWN by Tracy Wells.

This is a story about people from a town so small that you might drive through without taking a second look. But if you stopped for just a moment, you might see a young boy and girl fall in love, a cantankerous grocery store owner coping with change, a son returning home while a daughter thinks about leaving, and a handyman taking it all in while he fixes what is broken.
